Outpatient Treatment Coverage
Using Horizon BCBS for IOP

There are many reasons to seek professional treatment for addiction. Addiction is a progressive condition, meaning when left untreated the associated symptoms continue to worsen in severity. Within a matter of months or years, you can lose everything to your substance use disorder — your interpersonal relationships, your career, your drive and ambition, your sense of self. Not only does seeking professional help ensure you will not suffer any more consequences at the hands of your addiction, but most reputable treatment programs focus on helping you regain what you have lost. At Guardian IOP we provide our guests with an integrated and highly individualized program of recovery. We focus on physical, mental, emotional and spiritual healing while preparing our clients for continued success in sobriety. If you have been suffering from an addictive disorder of any type or severity, you are not alone. Addiction affects millions of people across the country; people of all ages, personal backgrounds and walks of life.

Unfortunately, the majority of people in need of professional help fail to seek addiction treatment of any kind. This is not because help is unavailable. In most cases, it is because people mistakenly believe addiction treatment is unaffordable, or because they don’t realize health insurance often covers drug and alcohol rehab. At Guardian IOP we remain dedicated to providing accessible substance use treatment to those in need by working closely with most major regional and national health insurance providers, including Horizon BCBS. If you are currently insured through Horizon BCBS or any other major provider, there is a good chance some or all of the addiction treatment services we offer are covered partially or in full. Does Horizon BCBS Health Insurance Cover Outpatient Drug or Alcohol Rehab?

Blue Cross Blue Shield has been helping individuals and families access quality healthcare services since 1929. As a major health insurance provider, Horizon BCBS covers mental health and behavioral health services, including outpatient addiction treatment. According to the official website, “Horizon Blue Cross Blue Shield of New Jersey, the state’s oldest and largest health insurer is a tax-paying, not-for-profit health service corporation, providing a wide array of medical, dental, and prescription insurance products and services. Horizon BCBSNJ is leading the transformation of health care in New Jersey by working with doctors and hospitals to deliver innovative, patient-centered programs that reward the quality, not quantity, of care patients receive.” If you or your loved one is insured through Horizon BCBS or any other policy, there are undeniably numerous addiction treatment programs which are in-network with your current provider. The Affordable Care Act and Behavioral Healthcare Services

In 2010 the Obama Administration passed the Affordable Care Act, or the ACA. Under the ACA, all major health insurance providers must offer comprehensive coverage for intensive outpatient treatment programs and other behavioral healthcare services. Your specific benefits will depend on several factors, including the state you live in, the plan you choose and the level of clinical care you seek. However, because substance use disorders are considered a pre-existing medical condition, your insurance provider cannot deny you coverage for outpatient treatment services, therapeutic intervention or medication assisted treatment options. The U.S. National Library of Medicine States, “The ACA enables states to address [addiction] through four primary mechanisms: insurance coverage expansions, regulatory insurance reforms that require inclusion of SUD treatments, enhanced parity, and opportunities to integrate SUD treatment and mainstream health care.” If you are currently insured through Horizon BCBS, there is a very good chance some or all of the outpatient treatment services provided by Guardian IOP are covered either partially or in full. Different Types of Horizon BCBS Outpatient Substance Use Treatment

There are three main types of outpatient substance abuse treatment covered by Horizon BCBS and other major regional and national health insurance providers. The right level of outpatient care for you depends on several factors, including how much flexibility and personal freedom you are looking for and how severe your substance use disorder has become. At Guardian IOP we offer a three-stage outpatient treatment program, allowing our clients more personal freedom as they progress in their recovery. We offer a range of effective treatment services during each stage of care, combining evidence-based therapies with holistic modalities and medication assisted treatment options. Contact us today to learn more.

Horizon BCBS Partial Hospitalization Programs (PHP)

Partial hospitalization is the highest level of outpatient treatment. While engaged in PHP clients meet between 5 and 7 days a week for roughly 8 hours every day. Because clients are able to return home in the evenings, they are able to fulfill personal responsibilities they would not be able to attend to in a higher level of care like residential rehab.

Horizon BCBS Intensive Outpatient Programs (IOP)

Intensive outpatient treatment is one small step down from PHP. Clients usually meet 5 days a week for several hours each day. This flexibility allows them to continue working a job, attending school or caring for dependents as they undergo treatment. IOP is an ideal option for people who have recently completed a higher level of care and are looking for additional support as they navigate early sobriety. IOP can also serve as a standalone treatment option in some cases. IOP is a great option for those who are looking for effective and affordable treatment options.

Horizon BCBS Outpatient Programs (OP)

Outpatient treatment is the lowest level of outpatient care seeing as it provides the most free time and flexibility. While Guardian IOP does not offer an outpatient program, we are happy to point you in the right direction. Outpatient treatment programs are ideal for those who are working or in school full-time and who are looking for extra support and encouragement as they navigate a life of sobriety.

Our Drug & Alcohol Treatment Services Include

In-Network vs Out-of-Network Horizon BCBS Substance Use Disorder Treatment

When figuring out how to cover the cost of outpatient addiction treatment, it is a good idea to determine whether the treatment center is in-network or out-of-network with your current health insurance provider. To help you save money, major health plans including Horizon BCBS work directly with an extensive network of doctors, treatment facilities and pharmacies. These providers agree to consistently meet a set list of criteria and accept a discounted rate under the plan in order to remain a part of the network.

Using Horizon BCBS health insurance for outpatient treatment

If you choose a treatment center that is in-network with Horizon BCBS, you will pay fewer out-of-pocket costs. In fact, you might not have any at all. If you choose a treatment center that is out-of-network with your current provider, you will most likely end up paying full price for IOP services. While out-of-network care does cost more, choosing an out-of-network treatment center also provides you with more options. The good news is Guardian IOP is in-network with Horizon BCBS, meaning if you are currently insured through this specific provider there is a good chance some or all of our addiction treatment services are covered either partially or in full.

How to Check Your Horizon BCBS Rehab Coverage

How can you check to see if your current health insurance provider covers the outpatient treatment services provided by Guardian IOP? There are several effective ways to check your Horizon BCBS rehab coverage, including:

  • Call the toll-free number located on the back of your insurance card. You will be put in touch with a Horizon BCBS representative who will let you know which intensive outpatient treatment services you can expect to get full or partial coverage for.
  • Log-in to your online insurance account. Most health insurance providers, including Horizon BCBS, provide their policyholders with an online portal. You can easily check your current benefits by logging into this portal.
  • If you are insured through work and you feel comfortable speaking with a member of your HR department, you can ask them whether or not intensive outpatient treatment services are covered. This is also a good opportunity to explore which laws protect your career while you seek behavioral healthcare services (for example, the Family and Medical Leave Act, or FMLA).
  • Reach out to Guardian IOP directly. You will be put in touch with a Treatment Advisor who will provide you with a health insurance benefit check, which can be completed over the phone in a short matter or minutes. Just be sure to have your insurance card on hand and your policy number readily available.

Finding an Addiction Treatment Center That Is Covered By Horizon BCBS

Addiction affects everyone differently. In some people, addiction develops quickly and completely alters the course of their lives within a matter of months. In others, addiction develops slowly over time, and results in deep emotional consequences but very few external changes. Because active addiction looks different for everyone, it makes sense that no two programs of addiction recovery look identical. Some people require long-term, multi-staged treatment, beginning with medical detox and transitioning into a residential rehab. Others require less intensive treatment, in which case IOP might serve as a viable standalone treatment option. If you have been struggling with a mild or moderate substance use disorder and you are looking for a flexible and effective level of care, Guardian IOP is available to help. The first step in finding an addiction treatment center covered by Horizon BCBS is finding the best level of care for you and your personal needs. IOP might be an ideal choice if:

  • You have recently completed a higher level of care and you are looking to take the next appropriate step on your personal recovery journey.
  • You have pre-existing obligations you cannot entirely step away from for weeks at a time (like caring for dependents, working full or part-time or continuing your education).
  • You are looking for a more cost-effective treatment option.
  • You have been struggling with a mild or moderate substance use disorder and no significant underlying mental illnesses or other underlying conditions.
  • You have been through a multi-phased treatment program in the past and you are looking for extra support after a brief slip.

Contact Guardian IOP today to learn more about the best treatment options for you, or to see how many of our intensive outpatient treatment services are covered by Horizon BCBS.
