Choosing an Outpatient Treatment Program

Choosing an outpatient treatment program might seem overwhelming or difficult to do, but the process is made much easier when you know what it is you are looking for. Outpatient addiction treatment is the most flexible level of therapeutic addiction treatment available – outpatient allows for more personal freedom than inpatient or intensive outpatient treatment, yet provides clients with the same effective treatment services they would find in residential rehab. Outpatient treatment programs typically meet for between three and four days a week for several hours each day, allowing clients to return home in the evenings and apply the skills they learn in day-to-day life.

When looking for an outpatient program the first step is determining whether or not this level of care best suits your personal needs and requirements. In most cases outpatient treatment programs serve as the final stage of a curriculum of clinical care – one that begins with medically monitored detox and transitions into residential rehab. It is always suggested that men and women who are suffering from a moderate or severe substance abuse disorder attend a residential rehab for between one and three months before transitioning into outpatient. However, outpatient might serve as an effective stand-alone treatment option if you or your loved one is struggling with a very mild substance abuse disorder and has no significant underlying conditions.

At Guardian IOP we offer an outpatient program that provides all of the clinical services one might find in residential rehab. Our comprehensive and highly individualized program caters to men and women of all ages.

Is Outpatient Treatment Right For Me?

If you are choosing an outpatient program for you or your loved one, it is important to first decide whether or not this level of clinical care is the most appropriate choice. Outpatient treatment might be right for you if:

  • You or your loved one has recently completed an inpatient treatment program – It is highly recommended that every treatment process is multi-phased, and that people who complete an extended stay at drug and alcohol rehab do not simply return home. Continuing with a lower level of clinical care helps make the transition back into fully independent all that much easier, and helps prevent relapse.
  • You or your loved one is struggling with a mild substance abuse disorder and you have no underlying mental health conditions, no unresolved trauma and no chronic health issues – Some people turn to drugs and alcohol after experiencing a significant life event, like the loss of a loved one, the loss of a long-time career or a messy divorce. If substance use is situational and if it has been relatively short-lived, outpatient treatment can serve as a stand-alone option. For example, say a middle-aged woman undergoes a particularly unpleasant divorce. After decades of drinking socially, she turns to alcohol to help her relax in the evenings. Within a month she is consuming roughly two bottles of wine every evening. She knows that drinking has become an issue, so she reaches out for help – she has not yet experienced any consequences as a result of her drinking, and she does not experience withdrawal symptoms when she stops. She simply needs some additional support and a low level of therapeutic intervention. If this sounds like you or your loved one, reach out to Guardian IOP today.
  • You or your loved one is looking after dependents or is someone’s sole caretaker, or he or she has a career that cannot be put on hold for months at a time – Sometimes personal obligations or responsibilities cannot be neglected for the time it would take to undergo a multi-phased program of recovery. If a higher level of flexibility is needed (but some level of treatment has become necessary), our outpatient program is an ideal choice.

  • Vocational training – Our vocational program was designed to help men and women who are looking to return to the workforce after a prolonged absence. We help them build resumes, teach interviewing skills and help with job placement.
  • Education training and assistance – This service is geared towards clients who want to return to school or complete a higher level of education.

  • Fitness programs – We teach each client the skills he or she needs to maintain a structured fitness routine that focuses on a restoration of physical health.
  • Nutritional counseling – Licensed nutritionists teach clients how to make consistently healthy choices and how to prepare nutrient-dense meals that bolster their recovery.
  • 12 step program immersion – In addition to providing a thorough 12 step education, we require that clients attend at least one 12 step meeting every day and that they are actively working through the steps with a sponsor.
  • Holistic Eastern therapy – We offer a range of holistic therapies, including yoga therapy, mindfulness meditation and acupuncture.
  • Relapse prevention training – Clients learn to identify their personal relapse triggers and work through these triggers using healthy coping mechanisms.
  • Dual diagnosis treatment options – We offer dual diagnosis treatment options for men and women who suffer from an underlying mental health condition like depression, anxiety or bipolar disorder.

At Guardian IOP our program of clinical care was designed by a team of dedicated professionals with combined decades of experience in the fields of substance abuse and mental health. Our program tackles integrated healing for our clients and for their loved ones, leaving no stone unturned.
